A Hundred Thousand Islands!
‘Lakshadweep’ literally means a hundred thousand islands, but contrary to what its name suggests, the archipelago as we know it today has a little over 30 islands. The spectacular beauty of these islands, however, more than makes up for what it lacks in numbers.
Lakshadweep is truly a marvel; a burst of splendid hues of blue and green and white; a blend of sea water, white sands, coral reefs and vast expanses of coconut trees.
Quick Facts
  • Lakshadweep is the smallest of the union territories of India
  • Only about 10 of the islands are inhabited
Popular Attractions
  • Bangaram was one of the first islands to be opened up for tourism in Lakshadweep. It is an uninhabited island and home to Lakshadweep’s first divers training institute, with the clear waters and enchanting marine diversity making it a diver’s delight. The island houses a well-established resort
  • Agatti island is the gateway to access Bangaram and other islands as it has an airport. It also has a resort and well-developed water sports facilities, including scuba diving, snorkeling and kayaking
  • Minicoy island is distinct from the other islands as it is said to be influenced by Maldivian culture. It has a rich heritage of performing arts. The ‘lava’ dance is performed during festive occasions
  • Kavaratti is the administrative headquarters of Lakshadweep and the most developed of the islands. It has an aquarium and a museum with many marine life exhibits
The ‘’India Travellers’’ Experience
  • Tourists on some islands can avail of glass-bottom boats which allow them to see coral reefs of myriad hues, sea cucumbers and other creatures as the boat ride progresses
  • More than sight-seeing spots, Lakshadweep offers the privacy and isolation required to just sit back, soak in the sun and spend your days in leisure in a refreshing environment
