The Holy Lake City
Tucked away beside a lake, in the north-west of the Ajmer district in Rajasthan, Pushkar is one of the oldest towns in India. The name ‘Pushkar’ is believed to mean ‘blue lotus flower’ in Sanskrit. Folklore has it that the lake in the heart of the town emerged from a lotus thrown at the spot by the Hindu deity Brahma. In keeping with this legend, Pushkar is also called ‘the holy lake city’.
For most part of the year, the town is a haven for pilgrims from across the country, seeking a dip in the holy lake. As the year ends, however, one sees the other face of Pushkar – vibrant, colourful, noisy and buzzing with activity. This is when the town plays host to the annual Pushkar Mela, also known as the Pushkar Camel Fair.
